Is MANGO STICKY RICE gluten-free?

March 28, 20243 min read

We love mango sticky rice!

Hands down this is our gluten-free go-to when traveling in Thailand. This simple dish is a popular Thai dessert that combines the sweet and creamy flavor of ripe mangoes with the rich and comforting taste of sticky rice, also known as glutinous rice. This delightful dessert is typically enjoyed during the mango season, which coincides with the summer months in Thailand.

To make mango sticky rice, glutinous rice is cooked until tender and then mixed with coconut cream, sugar, and a pinch of salt to add sweetness and richness to the rice. The rice is then allowed to cool slightly before being served with slices of fresh, ripe mango on top. The mangoes are often arranged elegantly on the plate, adding a vibrant pop of color to the dish.

One of the key elements of mango sticky rice is the coconut sauce, which is made by heating coconut milk with sugar and salt until it thickens slightly. This creamy and slightly sweet sauce is drizzled over the mango and rice just before serving.

Occasionally, fried mung beans or sesame seeds are added to the top of the finished dessert.

Substitutions & Adaptions

In our opinion, mango sticky rice is a near perfect dish for anyone with food restrictions. If you are unsure of the preparation for the mung beans, request no toppings.
