Ang Ku Kueh: What You Need to Know
Ang ku kueh, or “red tortoise cake,” is a traditional Hokkien treat often seen at birthdays and celebrations. The red color stands for prosperity, and the tortoise shell shape symbolizes long life.
These chewy snacks are usually made from glutinous rice flour and filled with sweet pastes like peanut, mung bean, or coconut. They're steamed and served on a square of banana leaf.

Is It Gluten-Free?
Most traditional ang ku kueh recipes are naturally gluten-free. But always ask. Some modern versions use wheat starch in the dough. While wheat starch may be processed to remove gluten, it's not always safe for people with celiac disease unless certified gluten-free.
