How do NIMA SENSORS test for gluten?

Nima Sensors: Portable Gluten Detector

Many of you have heard about Nima Sensors and are eager to learn more. Nima is a portable gluten-detecting device that enables you to test food for gluten. Just place a small sample of food into a single-use testing capsule, and you will have a result in a few minutes. Using a special chemical reaction and a laser, the Nima Sensor is like a pregnancy test for gluten. It's great for checking ingredients at home and easily fits into your pocket to go wherever you do.

How Nima Works

Let's take a quick look at how Nima works. Using a small sample of their food using a provided single-use capsule or test pod. This sample is typically a small amount of food that can fit into the capsule, such as a crumb from a slice of bread or a portion of a meal.

Once the sample is collected in the capsule, it is inserted into the Nima Gluten Sensor. The device then analyzes the sample using its proprietary technology to detect the presence of gluten proteins.

Nima At Home

Our gluten-free family has been using a Nima sensor since 2016 and has found it extremely helpful. It does not replace due diligence of checking ingredients or asking questions, but it will confirm that a food is safe to eat. Nima has let us know that the rendang lunch is gluten-free, but our coconut chutney contains hidden gluten.

Testing Made Easy

When we get new products with difficult-to-read ingredient lists, Nima helps us determine if they are safe to use. We know that this brand of horseradish sauce is fine, while Shoaxing cooking wine is not. We often test flours that are not certified gluten-free to check for potential cross-contamination. Nima is highly accurate at detecting gluten down to 5 parts per million. The Nima sensor will not tell you the exact parts per million of gluten in a sample; rather, it only displays a smiley face or a gluten found wheat symbol.

Limitations of Nima

Nima and Soy Sauce

Like all things in life, Nima is not perfect and does have a few limitations that you must be aware of if you want to use it properly. Nima cannot detect gluten in fermented foods, such as beer or alcohol, and it cannot detect gluten in hydrolyzed foods such as soy sauce.

Conclusion

If you need to follow a strict gluten-free diet or you are preparing food for people who are strictly gluten-free, Nima is an excellent tool to have on hand. Nima sensors and capsules can be purchased at NimaPartners.com. Remember, you will need a sensor and a new capsule for each test.
